Transgender Name Change Guide
Changing your name is often a vital step in the social transition process. In the UK, this process is straightforward and is achieved using a Deed Poll.
The Deed Poll Process
An Unenrolled Deed Poll is fully legally recognised for transgender individuals updating their name on their passport, driving licence, bank accounts, and NHS records. You do not need a doctor's letter, a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), or an Enrolled Deed Poll simply to change your name.
Changing Your Title (Mx, Mr, Miss, Ms)
Titles like Mr, Miss, Mrs, Ms, and Mx are known as "social titles." In the UK, you do not need legal documentation or a Deed Poll to change your social title; you can simply start using your preferred title.
However, when you notify organisations of your name change using your Deed Poll, you should instruct them to update your title at the same time.
Updating Your Gender Marker
While a Deed Poll changes your name, changing the gender marker (M/F) on official documents requires slightly different evidence:
1. HM Passport Office
To change the gender marker on your passport, HMPO requires your Deed Poll (for the name change) AND a letter from a medical professional (such as your GP or a gender specialist) confirming that your change of gender is "likely to be permanent."
2. DVLA (Driving Licence)
Your UK driving licence number actually contains encoded information about your gender. To update your name and gender marker with the DVLA, you simply need to send your Deed Poll and request the gender marker update on the D1 application form. A medical letter is usually not required.
3. NHS Records
You can ask your GP practice to update your name using your Deed Poll. If you wish to change your NHS gender marker, your GP practice must request a new NHS number for you. Your historical medical records will then be transferred to this new NHS number.
Enrolled vs. Unenrolled Deed Polls
We strongly recommend transgender individuals use an Unenrolled Deed Poll. Enrolling a Deed Poll requires your old name, new name, and home address to be permanently published on the public record (The London Gazette). This forces a public link between your deadname and your new name, which presents significant privacy and safety concerns. An Unenrolled Deed Poll guarantees privacy.
