How to Update Your Driving Licence
You must tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) immediately if you change your name. It is a legal requirement, and failing to do so could result in a fine.
Is it free?
Yes. Updating your name on your driving licence is free of charge, provided your licence has not expired and you are not changing your photo at the same time.
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Obtain a D1 Form
You cannot change your name online with the DVLA. You must apply by post. You need to obtain a D1 form ('Application for a driving licence'). You can get this form from most larger Post Office branches, or you can order one online from the GOV.UK website to be delivered to your home.
Step 2: Complete the Form
Fill out the D1 form. You must provide your previous details and your new name.
Step 3: Post the Application
You will need to send the following items to the DVLA address listed on the form:
- The completed D1 form.
- Your current photocard driving licence.
- Your original, executed Deed Poll (the DVLA will not accept photocopies).
Tip: We highly recommend sending your documents to the DVLA via Royal Mail Special Delivery or Tracked mail, as you are sending your original Deed Poll and current licence.
How long does it take?
The DVLA usually processes name changes and sends your new photocard licence within 3 weeks, though it can take longer depending on their backlog. Your original Deed Poll will be returned to you, usually in a separate envelope.
